How a hand sanitizing fixture won 50+ awards

How Vaask became the authority on hand sanitizer

By designing attractive fixtures that both enhance spaces and appeal to users, Vaask leads the way to a new era in hand hygiene. Jon Olsen | Founder We can thank the pandemic for exposing the public’s poor hand hygiene, because COVID-19 identified a major contributor to that problem: the lack of good hand sanitizing options. It’s no wonder people avoided using traditional dispensers, when without exception they were unappealing. Using them was always a messy experience that left hands dried out and with an unpleasant odor — and that’s if they actually contained sanitizer. More often than not, they sat empty. As an engineer and father, this became a call to action very early on in lockdown. Knowing that 80% of illnesses are transmitted through touch, I made it my goal not just to improve upon traditional sanitizers but to dramatically change an industry that had coasted for too long, due to a complacent public that tolerated the status quo. That status quo — cheap, single-use plastic bottles and wall dispensers — was long overdue for a total transformation. And that’s precisely what it got with Vaask®. Inspired by the Norwegian word for “wash” and pronounced “V-ahh-sk” like the breath of fresh air it is for a complacent industry, Vaask has initiated a whole new era in hand sanitizer, with refined and reliable fixtures that people actually line up to use. Consider this experience from a hotel manager who watched a 4-year-old approach Vaask. “She saw it by the elevator. Drawn by the LEDs, she immediately walked over and held her hand up. It was proof positive of the whole concept. If a 4-year-old is instantly drawn to it and can use it, you know it’s going to work.” Our engineers here at Vaask have a long history of innovation and the patents to prove it, having previously disrupted the fan industry at Big Ass Fans®. That company introduced energy-efficient comfort to sweltering workplaces and high design to homes and public spaces with the revolutionary, and silent, Haiku® ceiling fan. But it also knew the importance of listening to customers and learning from them. Working in collaboration with architects, designers and healthcare industry professionals, Vaask’s team of engineers brought the same approach that had worked so well at the fan company to hand sanitizing. The result was an equally revolutionary hand sanitizing fixture that quickly received rave reviews. With more than 50 awards, including Most Sustainable Product and Architect’s Choice honors at the Healthcare Facilities Symposium & Expo and back-to-back Healthcare Design Product Innovation Awards, as well as recognition by TIME’s Best Inventions, Vaask has established itself as the industry leader and authority on the subject of clean hands. And because all manufacturing is done locally here in Austin, Texas, we can quickly respond to customers’ needs, whether that means customizing your Vaask fixture’s appearance or developing an inconspicuous locking mechanism to deter curious or mischievous hands in schools. How do Vaask fixtures make hand sanitizing appealing? Designers will tell you that Vaask makes a great first impression. Its sleek, minimalist profile complements the style of any space and encourages people to use it, unlike ugly plastic bottles and wall dispensers. An eye-catching array of LEDs also reminds users to clean their hands. Then there’s the experience itself. Vaask’s touchless operation and superior engineering ensure that a precise amount of gel is dispensed every time, so there’s never any mess. And from a user’s perspective, there’s one more important point: Vaask sanitizing gel is pleasantly scented and leaves hands moisturized rather than rough and dry. And those who have installed Vaask know it’s the hands-down winner with maintenance employees. The fixture runs on AC power or Power over Ethernet, so no batteries to replace. Vaask’s cast-aluminum, high-capacity fixtures reduce the frequency of refills, while an app and online dashboard automatically alert staff when sanitizer levels run low. This eliminates the time-consuming chore of checking each individual unit and also ensures they always stay filled. This exclusive technology solves the most common problem with hand sanitizer, which, despite being more essential than ever before, is frequently ignored as studies have found nearly 80% of people expect dispensers to be empty. Unlike other companies that lock customers into expensive supply contracts, Vaask works with any quality sanitizing gel. So, no burdensome contracts, just exemplary service and a generous five-year warranty. With more threats to public health emerging virtually every day, providing hand sanitizing fixtures that people will actually want to use is crucial to reducing the spread of germs. Vaask understands what people both need and want, and we continue to listen to our customers to ensure we provide the highest quality experience. That’s why we have quickly established ourselves as the authority in hand hygiene, and why we will remain so for years to come.

Airports lead the public on a touchless journey

Airports lead the public on a touchless journey

Recognizing that our hands transmit 80% of illnesses, airports invested heavily over the course of the pandemic in going touchless, and nowhere is that more evident than in their replacement of flimsy plastic sanitizer dispensers with Vaask’s built-to-last, touchless hand sanitizing fixture. Jon Olsen | Vaask Founder There’s no getting around it: We’re living in a bacterial world — always have, always will. And though the recent pandemic may be over, germs most certainly haven’t gone anywhere, including the ones that cause COVID. They’re busy evolving in an effort to have their way, while we’re equally hard at work trying to keep them in check. The past few years have taught the best way to do that, but applying what we’ve learned is a different matter. In the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic, predictions about how it would forever change our lives were all over the internet. In March 2020, just days after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention first urged Americans to avoid gatherings of more than 50 people, Architectural Digest published the article, “How the Covid-19 Pandemic Will Change the Built Environment.” And the prediction most professionals agreed on is that post-pandemic, we would see many fewer touch points throughout public spaces. In the three years since, we’ve seen a definite trend toward all things touchless. Local big-box stores, for example, now offer touchless faucets for home bathrooms, and QR codes have become as ubiquitous here in America as they’ve long been in Asia. But nowhere has touchless technology been adopted as rapidly as in airports, where bottle fillers increasingly accompany water fountains, and luggage tag printing, retail purchases and wash stations no longer require physical contact. Around the world, airports are rolling out new touchless technologies every day. Aviation Week reports that at London’s Heathrow Airport, passengers flying United Airlines now have the option of using their mobile devices at check-in kiosks, eliminating the need to touch a screen that thousands of people use everyday. And in Detroit, Delta is developing a curb-to-gate program for domestic passengers that relies on facial recognition for everything from checking bags to boarding the aircraft. Airports are also ahead of other public spaces in implementing touchless wash and sanitizing stations. It’s now rare to confront a water faucet or soap dispenser — much less a restroom door — that is manually operated at most major airports. So it should come as no surprise that airports quickly recognized the advantages of installing the touchless hand sanitizing fixtures developed and manufactured by Vaask in Austin, Texas. Architectural Digest’s 2020 article predicted that, post-pandemic, there would be more opportunities for hand sanitizing. They didn’t go out on a limb with that one — our hands transmit 80% of germs, after all, a fact that is much more widely known today than it was in the unenlightened pre-pandemic era. It’s now recognized that hand sanitizer is here to stay, and Vaask has elevated the experience of hand hygiene by solving the worst problems of pre-pandemic sanitizers — the plastic pump bottles and flimsy wall units that required touching and, when they weren’t empty, dispensed gel that left your hands dry and smelling of rubbing alcohol. Vaask’s modern, minimalist, touchless metal fixtures fit right into airports’ streamlined aesthetic. At the Nashville International Airport, for example, Vaask’s permanent sanitizing fixtures have become standard. The airport leadership chose Vaask to replace flimsy freestanding dispensers that had become obstacles in busy concourses filled with 18 million travelers annually. In addition to its clean appearance and touchless operation, “Vaask’s easy maintenance stood out as a huge benefit to the airport’s operations,” said architect TJ Ju, who helped lead a major renovation to the facility. Vaask’s first priority has always been its operation. The fixture is easy to maintain and refill, making it ideally suited for airports. Thanks to its proprietary app that alerts staff when sanitizer levels are low, and the fact that it is hard-wired rather than battery-powered, there’s no need to have designated personnel constantly checking fixtures, as is the case in many airports with traditional sanitizer dispensers. And Vaask’s lock option keeps it secure from prying hands. Instead of the inaccurate infrared sensors common in traditional dispensers, Vaask uses sophisticated PalmPilot® technology that precisely detects hands, with the fixture instantly reversing flow if someone pulls their hand away. No drips or messes causing damage to floors or creating slip-and-fall risks.  And Vaask’s recessed units are easily accessible but don’t take up precious floor space, an important consideration given the number of people with baggage in tow and courtesy vehicles that move through airport concourses daily. The sanitizing industry has long locked companies into onerous, pricey contracts similar to the longtime razor-and-blade model used by corporate giants like P&G. Vaask’s technology allows for any quality sanitizer gel to be used, saving customers up to 65% on monthly sanitizer costs. The gel, too, has gotten a makeover: Its moisturizing formulation uses 70% plant-derived ethanol for a more pleasing natural scent. Clearly, permanent, touch-free sanitizers that make hand hygiene inviting are where the world is headed. It’s no surprise, then, that airports are helping us get there. But Vaask is doing its part, too. Because when a hand sanitizing fixture makes people want to use it not just to keep themselves and others healthy, but for the experience alone, that helps make all of us healthier.

Nashville airport installs Vaask's hand sanitizing fixture

Nashville airport selects Vaask to enhance health and safety

Touchless hand sanitizing fixture simplifies maintenance MARCH 24, 2023 — AUSTIN, TEXAS — Hand hygiene company Vaask® today announced the Nashville International Airport is installing its touchless hand sanitizing fixtures to protect the health and safety of travelers and employees while also simplifying maintenance for its staff. The airport leadership selected Vaask because of its development as a permanent fixture, as they sought to remove flimsy freestanding dispensers from the busy halls of the airport, which sees more than 18 million travelers annually. “Vaask’s easy maintenance also stood out as a major benefit to the airport’s operations,” said architect T.J. Ju, who helped lead a renovation of the airport’s B & C concourses, where Vaask is being installed. The airport is in the midst of a major expansive renovation dubbed BNA Vision that included extensive updates to the 200,000-square-foot lobby and central terminal that celebrated their grand reopening in January. Vaask uses AC power or PoE instead of ever-changing batteries and offers a maintenance app that alerts staff when it’s time to refill. The app eliminates the time-consuming chore of checking each individual fixture and also ensures fixtures always stay filled. This exclusive technology solves the most common problem with hand sanitizer, which, despite being more essential than ever before, is frequently not used as studies have found nearly 80% of people report dispensers to be empty. “In developing Vaask, we specifically talked with not just healthcare professionals but also owners and operators of all types of facilities, from airports and restaurants to schools and offices, because every space is different and needs a unique approach,” Vaask Founder Jon Olsen said. “Because we design, engineer and manufacture Vaask here in America, we offer unprecedented customization to solve a customer’s specific problems.” Vaask fixes the frequent frustrations caused by traditional hand sanitizer dispensers at airports including: Vaask offers customers savings of up to 65% on monthly sanitizer costs, as the fixture can be refilled with any quality sanitizer gel and there are no locked-in supply contracts. vaask brushmill wine

An 1800s New England landmark gets a thoughtful update

When interior designer Caryn Paradis was brought on to refresh the historic The Brushmill by the Waterfall restaurant, she knew they would need to proceed carefully. A New England landmark located in Chester, Conn., The Brushmill occupies a space dating back to the early 1800s. First converted to a restaurant in the mid-1970s, it has been a local destination for decades.  The renovation needed to retain enough of the longtime look and feel of the space so loyal regulars would still feel at home in their beloved eatery.  Paradis, the lead designer with Caryn Paradis Interior Design, worked with the owners to incorporate details from the original mill while making the space feel fresh and modern.  “Highlighting the historical beauty was our main goal with these renovations,” the owners noted in a Facebook post announcing the project.  A complete gut renovation was needed.  “There’s not a square inch that we haven’t touched, starting with all new floor joists,” Paradis said.  But key details were retained and restored. The chestnut beams, the stacked stone fireplace and the overhead pulley system from the mill are all from the original building.  As much as possible, anything that couldn’t be restored was repurposed. The old chestnut floors had to be removed, but the wood was repurposed into tabletops. An old tool bench from the mill was turned into a bar top. The holes that held the tools were kept in place to serve as a reminder of its original purpose. The owners didn’t limit their updates to the restaurant’s decor. They also included forward-thinking amenities to address the comfort and welfare of their guests. For example, they converted an old coat check into a nursing room for comforting or feeding a crying or hungry child. The room features a comfortable lounge chair, changing table and refrigerator to store food for a baby.  Making hand sanitizer readily available to guests and staff was another top priority for the owners. They installed Vaask hand sanitizing fixtures in the restaurant because they matched the contemporary yet historical ambience of the updated restaurant. But Paradis recommended they use Vaask for more than its stylish design.  “We needed a permanent solution that looked great and functioned well,” Paradis said.  With so many different fixtures in the 10,000-square-foot space, the owners didn’t want to add replacing batteries to their maintenance list. Vaask fixtures are hard-wired, so no batteries are required. Refillable with any sanitizer gel, the large-capacity sanitizer tank can also go longer between refills.  Paradis and the owners are happy with the results of the year-long project — as are the guests.  “Everything from the food, ambiance, setting, staff and presentation was incredible. Highly recommend!” one patron wrote soon after the restaurant reopened. Click here to see Vaask in action.

A more sustainable future is in our hands

The touchless hand sanitizing fixture helps environmentally conscious companies achieve their goals By Jon Olsen | Vaask With constant foot traffic, hotels and restaurants need products that are built to last while ensuring they meet customer expectations. Beyond that, an endless supply of single-use products or expensive items prone to break hardly support the sustainability goals established by environmentally conscious companies. The Vaask touchless hand sanitizing fixture helps the sustainably minded achieve their goals. Backed by a five-year warranty, the U.S.-manufactured fixture features all-metal construction and replaces the endless array of single-use plastic hand sanitizer bottles. Selected for its quality manufacturing and superior coating options, Vaask’s cast aluminum allows for customizable colors and graphics so your business can proudly brand your dispensers to showcase a sincere commitment to cleanliness. Vaask is easy to maintain, and the refillable tank contains nearly twice the sanitizer of typical dispensers. That equates to less frequent refills. Built to last Honored as the overall winner in Healthcare Design’s Product Innovation Awards, Vaask dispenses the right amount of sanitizer every time. The fixture has won nearly 20 design, technology and sustainability awards since its debut. One product judge noted: “Vaask is a practical and useful offering in a post-COVID world. The product eliminates plastic waste, and the reusable and refillable high-capacity tank is an important design feature that allows for bulk refill of product and lower operating costs.” Traditional hand sanitizer offerings come with high ongoing costs, including frequently replacing single-use plastic bottles or flimsy plastic dispensers that easily break. The hand hygiene industry has long relied on selling these plastic dispensers without considering maintenance costs or the fact that around 20 percent of dispensers break within just two years. With Vaask able to accept any quality gel sanitizer, operators aren’t locked into expensive long-term supply contracts. Reliable performance Vaask was developed with healthcare professionals. The dependable, high-capacity and low-maintenance dispenser helps hospitality spaces provide guests and management with a better experience: Click here to see Vaask in action.

culture-of-cleanliness

How to cultivate a culture of cleanliness

Vaask can give your facility the edge By Jon Olsen | Vaask With the pandemic now endemic and office workers returning, employers have an opportunity to proactively reduce absenteeism. Before the pandemic, researchers estimated 3% of workers called in sick daily, but with that number now staggeringly higher, it’s more important than ever to address what’s responsible for 80% of illnesses — our hands. The Vaask® touchless hand sanitizing fixture couldn’t have come at a better time. Vaask offers a superior solution that is easy to use and cost-effective. Most importantly, it significantly reduces germ transmission. Building a healthier workplace Developed with healthcare industry architects, designers and professionals, Vaask — a name inspired by the Norwegian word for ‘wash’ — complements the style of any space and makes hand hygiene convenient: Behind each of these differentiating features is a focus on advanced technology, designed to create a simple, reliable experience with less work for today’s overtaxed maintenance crews. Vaask incorporates a high-end stepper motor and peristaltic pump in its design, ensuring that it dispenses the correct amount of sanitizer every time, tracks usage to alert you via an exterior LED panel and an online dashboard when it’s time to refill, and can be refilled with Vaask’s premium sanitizer or any quality gel sanitizer. You’ll never be locked into expensive long-term supply contracts. Vaask’s proprietary PalmPilot sensor accurately detects hands, eliminating mess. The PalmPilot technology measures the speed at which light photons leave its sensor and return. Because the component measures speed rather than light, the PalmPilot sensor functions even in spaces where dust can be an issue and detects hands of any shade that would otherwise flummox everyday infrared sensors. Built to last Vaask also helps sustainably minded companies achieve their goals. Backed by a 5-year warranty, the U.S.-manufactured fixture features all-metal construction and replaces the endless array of single-use plastic hand sanitizer bottles. Selected for its quality manufacturing and superior coating options, the cast aluminum allows for customizable colors and graphics, so your company can proudly brand your Vaask dispensers to showcase a sincere commitment to cleanliness. Vaask earned honors from TIME’s Best Inventions, with judges praising the company for giving hand hygiene “the kind of design attention that the rest of a modern workplace gets.” Vaask is also easy to maintain. The refillable tank contains nearly twice the sanitizer of typical dispensers, requiring less frequent refills. Making hand hygiene attractive The animation in Vaask’s customizable LED panel beckons users, encouraging the kind of frequent use that helps reduce the spread of germs — crucial since our hands transmit 80% of illnesses. And after a reliable dispensing of Vaask’s gel sanitizer, the user appreciates a lovely fragrance, in total resulting in a positive experience. “The design of this product is outstanding and makes the necessary hand sanitizer station look appealing and less clinical,” wrote a judge for Healthcare Design’s Product Innovation Awards that honored Vaask with its top prize. When a hand sanitizing fixture makes people want to use it not just to keep themselves and others healthy, but for the experience alone, then they’re going to use it more regularly — whether anyone’s watching them or not. And that helps make every one of us healthier. Easy to maintain The last thing facility managers need is another to-do on the list. So while the past few years have put hand sanitizers front and center, most dispensers just add to their workload. Built to last, Vaask is reliable, inexpensive to operate and simple to maintain. No more making the rounds to check each unit individually. Wrote one award contest judge, “The automatic sanitizer dispenser created by Vaask is a practical and useful offering in a post-COVID world. The product eliminates plastic waste and the refillable high-capacity tanks are an important design feature that allows for bulk refill of product and lower operating costs.” Award-winning answer for facilities Vaask sanitizing dispensers have been honored with numerous other awards, including the Red Dot product design award, Boutique Design’s BDNY Product Design Award and the Green Product Award. The fixture also won Best New Healthcare Product of the Year at the Best in Biz Awards, as well as two Symposium Distinction Awards at the Healthcare Facilities Symposium & Expo, which recognized Vaask as both Most Sustainable Product and Architect’s Choice Product.
